Frequently asked questions

Clear answers before your visit.

Can an ear piercing get infected even when sterile equipment is used?

Yes, an infection is still possible even when sterile equipment is used. Piercing creates an opening in the skin, and germs can enter during the procedure or healing. Sterile single-use equipment, hand hygiene, appropriate technique and suitable aftercare reduce the risk, but they cannot eliminate it completely.

What should I check to make sure ear-piercing equipment is safe?

Check that components that pierce the skin are sterile, single-use and opened at the time of the procedure. Packaging should be intact and within its expiry date. You can also ask how surfaces are disinfected, jewellery is prepared and sharps are discarded. Clean-looking packaging alone does not establish sterility.

Are gloves enough to make an ear piercing hygienic?

No, gloves do not replace hand hygiene or technique that prevents contamination. Hands should be cleaned before putting gloves on and after removing them. Gloves contaminated by touching a phone or another surface need changing before the procedure resumes. Appropriate skin preparation and avoiding contact with sterile components also matter.

Is a needle or a cartridge device more hygienic for ear piercing?

Hygiene depends on the equipment, handling and piercing site, not simply the method’s name. A sterile single-use needle and certain sterile disposable cartridge systems can limit contamination when used correctly. Reusable devices that cannot be sterilized raise concerns. An individual assessment determines the appropriate method; piercing guns are not suitable for cartilage.

How do I clean a new ear piercing without irritating the skin?

Gently clean the piercing with sterile 0.9% saline wound wash, following your aftercare instructions. Wash your hands before any contact and pat dry with clean disposable gauze. Avoid alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, homemade salt mixtures and excessive cleaning. Do not twist the jewellery, and avoid swimming while the piercing is healing.

How can I tell normal ear-piercing healing from an infection?

Mild tenderness, localized redness and a little pale fluid that forms a crust can occur during healing. Increasing pain, marked warmth, spreading redness, pus or fever require prompt medical assessment, especially with a cartilage piercing. Do not remove the jewellery yourself if you suspect an infection; seek professional advice first.

Can the choice of jewellery reduce risks after ear piercing?

Yes, appropriately sized jewellery made from a suitable material can reduce irritation, allergic reactions and tissue pressure. Implant-grade titanium is often an option for people sensitive to nickel. Jewellery should be sterile when inserted and allow room for initial swelling. An individual assessment helps determine the appropriate material, fit and placement.

Should I postpone an ear piercing if I have eczema or a health condition?

Yes, postponing may be advisable if the skin at the piercing site is irritated, has an eczema flare or appears infected. Poorly controlled diabetes, immune suppression, bleeding disorders and certain medications can also affect risk. Share your medical history and treatments beforehand. An individual assessment, sometimes with medical input, determines whether piercing is appropriate.
